ALPACAS IN

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand has around 1300 Alpacas in New Zealand with about 86 registered breeders.

There may have been earlier Alpacas in New Zealand but most the current animals decend from

the first major shippments brought into the country in the late 1980's.

Initally Alpacas were imported from Chile but at the moment Peruivian imports are increasing

as they are regarded as having finer fibre.

The farming of Alpacas in New Zealand appears to be evenly scattered throughout the country.

In New Zealand the majority of Alpacas are of the Huacaya variety with only several Suri and

even reports of several with Vicuna traces.
